If you’ve ever caught the Chicago skyline glowing over Lake Michigan or watched the river shimmer at dusk, this probably won’t come as a surprise: the city has officially been named one of the most beautiful in the world after dark.

A new 2026 study from Travelbag ranked the world’s prettiest cities at night, placing Chicago at number eight alongside heavy hitters like Tokyo, New York City and Singapore. It’s a strong showing that cements the Windy City’s reputation as one of the most visually striking spots in the world, particularly after the sun sets.

The ranking looked at a mix of factors, including Instagram hashtag volume, light pollution levels and the number of skyscrapers over 150 meters tall, all metrics that help define just how dazzling a city appears at night.

Chicago’s placement makes perfect sense when you consider its after-hours appeal. With 137 skyscrapers towering above the streets and a nightlife scene that keeps neighborhoods buzzing well into the early hours, the city delivers serious visual drama. The combination of historic architecture, sleek modern high-rises and that unbeatable waterfront creates a skyline that feels tailor-made for golden hour—and even better once the evening slips into full-on neon.

And unlike some cities where the magic is confined to a single vantage point, Chicago’s nighttime beauty is remarkably accessible. You can enjoy it from the Chicago Riverwalk, from the LH Rooftop or from the Navy Pier. Even a casual stroll through downtown on the way to dinner can deliver postcard-worthy views at nearly every turn.

The study crowned Tokyo the world’s most scenic city at night, followed by New York City and Melbourne, thanks to their dense skylines and electric energy. But Chicago’s inclusion in the top 10 puts it firmly in global company and reinforces what locals have known for years: Chicago has a real glow about it. Now the world is recognizing it, too.

Here’s the full ranking:

1. Tokyo
2. New York City
3. Melbourne
4. Sydney
5. Hong Kong
6. Toronto
7. Singapore
8. Chicago
9. Seoul
10. Vancouver
