Get ready for an extra 55 hours of public pool time this summer.

Chicago's outdoor pool season is about to get a lot longer.
In a welcome development for anyone who's ever felt summer ends too soon, the Chicago Park District has announced that its outdoor pools will open on June 19 and, for the first time, remain open through Labor Day weekend.

The move means Chicagoans will have access to neighborhood pools throughout one of the hottest stretches of the year, including the late-August heat waves that have become increasingly common in recent summers. The Park District has previously experimented with keeping select pools open longer, but this year's plan represents a broader commitment to extending access to swimming and cooling centers across the city.
“Chicago Park District neighborhood pools are essential community resources that provide recreation, wellness opportunities, and relief during periods of extreme summer heat,” said Chicago Park District Superintendent & CEO Carlos Ramirez-Rosa. “This summer, residents will enjoy approximately 55 additional hours of outdoor pool access at neighborhood pools opening June 19, compared to last year. Because of our successful early recruitment efforts and the dedication of more than 700 trained lifeguards, we are able to expand access while ensuring our beaches, indoor pools, and outdoor pools are fully staffed and ready for a safe and enjoyable summer.”
The announcement comes as Chicago continues to grapple with rising summer temperatures and increasing concerns about heat-related health risks. Public pools, along with the city's beaches, often serve as critical cooling resources for residents who don't have access to air conditioning or private recreation facilities.
Chicago boasts one of the nation's largest municipal aquatics systems, with 50 outdoor pools spread across neighborhoods from Rogers Park to South Shore and from Austin to Hegewisch. Many facilities include accessibility features such as ADA lifts, stairs and zero-depth entry options.
For families, the timing couldn't be better. School will be out, temperatures will be climbing and neighborhood pools will once again become gathering places for swimming lessons, lap swimming, open swim sessions and summer camp activities.
Pool schedules, hours and location-specific information are available through the Chicago Park District.
