It all started with a challenge issued via Twitter: tired of having to remind customers of how to properly wear their masks, the folks at Manny's Deli tried to incentivize them with free food. "If we go 30 days without having to ask anyone to put a mask on or properly wear your mask, we will give away free sandwiches for the day. So far the longest we made is 1pm," read a March 14 tweet on the Manny's Deli account.

The West Loop delicatessen hasn't gone a day without someone showing up to its counter without a mask in the days since issuing its challenge, but an anonymous benefactor has stepped in to reward customers that are wearing their masks to protect themselves and others. Yesterday, Manny's Deli announced that it will give away 1,000 sandwiches on March 30 to anyone who shows up properly wearing a mask—the offer is first come, first served and limited to one sandwich per customer. Plus, Manny's is going to send some additional free sandos to the frontline workers staffing a local vaccine clinic.

While those willing to line up in front of a deli ahead of 9:30am will enjoy a free sandwich next Tuesday, it's worth noting that the initial #MannysMaskChallenge failed for a reason. But there's still time to take the intent of the deli's pleas to heart—if you're visiting local restaurants, bars and shops, wearing a mask is the right thing to do for yourself, your fellow customers and the folks behind the counter.
