Mayor Lightfoot to Chicago: ‘You must cancel the normal Thanksgiving plans’

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced today that the city will initiate a 30-day stay-at-home advisory (not an order) starting at 6am on Monday, November 16. If you're checking your calendar, that includes Thanksgiving, which falls on Thursday, November 26 this year.

Squashing any uncertainty, Lightfoot addressed the holiday directly in her new Protect Chicago plan, which outlines four key asks from the city. Last on the list is "Cancel any traditional Thanksgiving gatherings."

"And while this is tough—and of course this whole year has been tough—we must tell you, you must cancel the normal Thanksgiving plans, particularly if they include guests that do not live in your immediate household," Lightfoot said.

Undoubtedly, this specific advice stems from two of the city's chief concerns: Welcoming outside guests into your home (or being a guest at someone else's home) and out-of-state travel.

"I know that many people are tired, exhausted. The fatigue is real," Lightfoot said. "All of our lives have been upended by this terrible virus, and even as we put these restrictions into place, I know that our success is fundamentally rested on our ability to work together to find solutions to educate people into compliance."

As you make (or cancel) your plans for the upcoming holiday season, keep an eye on the city's stay-at-home advisory as well as its latest emergency travel order for further updates.
