Outdoor movie screenings are coming back to Lincoln Yards this summer

The development site has pivoted from running a drive-in theater to hosting movies on the lawn.

Amid last summer's drive-in movie theater boom, Lincoln Yards—the 55-acre riverside development site between Lincoln Park and Bucktown—launched a popular drive-in movie series aptly called The Drive-in at Lincoln Yards, screening classics like Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Blues Brothers for a crowded field of vehicles. This summer, now that COVID-19 rates have fallen enough for us to emerge from our cars, Lincoln Yards will instead host walk-up movie screenings during its Movies on the Lawn series, which will launch alongside a host of other events at the development's new outdoor activation area on July 15.

Like last summer, Movies on the Lawn is a collaboration between the developer Sterling Bay and the Davis Theater in Lincoln Square, with film programming selected by the theater (which also receives all of the ticket revenue). Unlike last year, however, guests will be able to walk up to the site for a more classic, picnic-like outdoor movie experience. Upon arrival, you'll be assigned a 10x10 seating area on a first-come, first-served basis, which you're free to fill with lawn chairs, blankets and other movie-watching gear. Classic theater concessions—think gourmet popcorn, Twizzlers and the like—can either be purchased with your ticket ahead of time or onsite, and alcoholic beverages will be available for folks of drinking age. The space doesn't feature outdoor amplified speakers, so you'll need to bring an FM radio or use phone apps to tune into the audio.

The screenings are set to take place at a new community programming space located at Ada Street and Concord Place called Meanwhile at Lincoln Yards, which includes three basketball courts, a mobile retail zone of rotating vendors and the open-air "Harmony Zone," where the movies will be shown. In addition to Movies on the Lawn, you can also catch other outdoor programming and events in the space throughout the summer, including musical performances and art installations from Urban Gateways, a local nonprofit for young people in the arts. A schedule for those events will be available on Lincoln Yards' website and social media pages in the coming weeks.

Tickets for Movies on the Lawn, which will run Thursday through Sunday this summer, are $10 per person and will be sold onsite as well as on the David Theater's website—the series kicks off with Field of Dreams before continuing on with flicks like Caddyshack, The Karate Kid and other nostalgic summer blockbusters. Gates open at 6pm, and movie screenings will start about half an hour after sunset. Check out the initial lineup below and look forward to a summer of movie nights in the open air!
