Unless you’re in your nineties, there’s a decent chance you haven’t heard of the Whiz-Bang, a cocktail that sounds more like a verb than a drink. Believed to have been developed in the 1920s, the recipe is a blend of Scotch whiskey, dry vermouth, absinthe, orange bitters and grenadine. It’s the kind of drink that’s strong enough to pull you out of a deep winter slumber and bright enough to pique your interest in spring.

You can try a twist on this old-timey sipper throughout March and April at Golden Teardrops, a dark and sexy bar below Lonesome Rose in Logan Square. We collaborated with the bartenders on an updated version of the Whiz-Bang that uses pomegranate syrup in lieu of grenadine, resulting in a refreshingly sweet and slightly earthy taste. Grab a seat at this subterranean watering hole and raise a glass to spring.
