Cafés and restaurants across Zagreb are unfurling their umbrellas and setting up their outdoor seating as temperatures rise. Some of these terraces offer beautiful views or sit in extraordinary surroundings. Here's our top six!

A'e, Radićeva 54

This multi-storey terraced bar has a unique view overlooking bustling Tkalčićeva and the spires of Zagreb Cathedral. Open every day from 10am to midnight, this popular spot is also known for its cocktails and gin garden backdropped by cityscape. Café website here.

Booksa, Martićeva ulica 14D

An urban location combines bookstore and coffeeshop, Booksa sits in front of a pedestrianised street, a canvas for local artists, and a small tree-lined park. All is a block from the Meštrović Pavilion in east-central Zagreb, and a constant buzz of activity. With several shaded places to sit, the terrace is the perfect place to rest your legs after a hard day's sightseeing. Café website here.

Dubravkin Put, Dubravkin put 2
Found in a wooded valley near Zagreb's historic Upper Town, this high-end restaurant is only a few minutes' walk from the city's busiest street but feels like its in the middle of a secluded forest. One of the best dining experiences in the capital can be enjoyed here, combining award-winning Mediterranean cooking with a beautiful terrace. For reservations, see the website.

Kavana Palainovka, Ilirski trg
This café bar at the northernmost point of the Upper Town sits underneath an observatory from the 1800s and a former Catholic monastery. This is an area infrequently seen by visitors, the gravel terrace has a view over a beautiful small square, and only a few steps away on the monastery grounds await commanding views of the whole city. Café website here.

Kavkaz, Trg Republike Hrvatske 1

Combining the Croatian words for coffee and theatre, Kava + Kazalište, Kavkaz sits just across from the Croatian National Theatre, and provides an excellent view of the pretty square surrounding this Baroque cultural landmark. Particularly popular among actors and celebrities. Restaurant Facebook page here.

Maksimir, Maksimirski perivoj 3
The enormous Maksimir park on the city's east side has so many miles of lakes, forest, and winding footpaths, you forget that you're surrounded on all sides by a city. It also contains Zagreb city zoo, and picturesque cafés and restaurants. This one sits just inside the main gates opposite the Maksimir Stadium, in operation for 125 years at least, its expansive terrace surrounded by greenery.
