While away an afternoon at LACMA's Tuesday Matinees series and catch a free screening of this sci-fi classic. Steven Spielberg's 1977 predecessor to E.T. still holds up remarkably well; the only admittedly dated aspect is the costumes. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, François Truffaut, and scored by (who else?) John Williams, the film tells the story of a blue-collar worker whose encounter of the third kind—the term for "actual contact" with aliens—leaves him feeling forebodingly drawn to a patch of wilderness.
