Move over Pineapple Express and Harold & Kumar: Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke (1978) is the original stoner comedy. After making a name for themselves as a successful and perpetually high comedy act in the ‘70s, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong created their first and funniest film, inventing a genre that is now as popular as ever. Following the duo around California and Mexico on a never-ending quest for quality weed (in a van made of marijuana no less), Smoke was not a hit with critics but has become a stoner cult classic. Catch this screening and a conversation with the legendary Cheech Marin himself, but be advised to make prior dinner plans—your munchies shan’t be satisfied in the theater.
