John Boorman's widely acclaimed 1972 drama-thriller Deliverance stars Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox as friends being stalked by backwoods neanderthals. Author James Dickey penned the screenplay for the film, which was based on his novel of the same name. The odyssey's disturbing elements of unexpected violence still hold up 43 years later. American Cinematheque is screening the film, followed by 1998 Brendan Gleeson vehicle The General, as part of its series to pay homage to the director: "Movie Alchemist: The Films of John Boorman."
