Major Montreal gas leak forces evacuations and business closures

As a safety precaution, power was cut across a large section of the affected Montreal neighbourhood and is not expected to be restored until the end of the day.

First an urgent boil-water advisory, now a major gas leak sparks a power outage in Montreal.

According to a report by CTV news, a gas leak in Old Montreal prompted the precautionary evacuation of residents and businesses Friday morning near Bonsecours and Saint-Paul Streets.

The report stated that more than 40 firefighters were deployed to the scene.

The response began at 7:43 a.m. and was ongoing as of noon.

Power was shut off across the affected area, spanning McGill Street to Berri Street and De la Commune Street to Notre-Dame Street.

Montreal police (SPVM) are helping manage traffic in the neighbourhood.

What are the symptoms of a gas leak?

Symptoms from a natural gas leak may include:

Headaches, sometimes severe

Dizziness

Fatigue

Nausea

Irregular breathing

Chest pains

Memory problems

Blurred vision

What to do if there’s a gas leak?

The City of Montreal suggests the following tips in the event of a gas leak:

Avoid flames and sparks

Don't smoke

Don't use any devices near the leak, even a cell phone or a light switch. Static electricity could cause a spark

Leave the building or if you are already outside, move away from the leak

In case of emergency call 911
