The gallery presents ten pieces from the artist's sculptural series known as "Stacks." Each stack consists of multiple sets of boxes, shallow and rectangular in form, that were identically fashioned out of aluminum, copper or steel. These repeating units, painted or anodized a particular hue or combination of colors, are mounted one above the other on a wall, creating a relief that suggests a column or pilaster. Sometimes Judd would employ a scheme of contrasting colors or materials; sometimes, he'd substitute panels of tinted Plexiglas for the top of each box, casting colored shadows upon the wall. Cool and elegant, these studies in the relationships among form, color and space have rightfully become his signature pieces.
