This latest installation by Friedrich Kunath, a German transplant to Los Angeles, comprises the artist’s paintings and sculpture, personal mementos and wide range of books and tchotkes he collected over the years. Theses items—with the exception a life size bronze of a man seated on the floor with a birdcage over his head—are piled into an area filling a corner of the gallery, which is separated from the rest of the space by a partially framed-out wall that’s missing its sheetrock. Inside are also a desk, a set of shelves and a mattress on the floor. The result, resembling a teenager’s or hoarder’s bedroom, serves as both a mini-retrospective and a meditation on the wages of memory.
