Unbelievably, this Brooklyn artist’s installation at the Whitney represents his first solo exhibition in the United States. Is he ready for prime-time? The piece itself is certainly ambitious, taking command of its space with a free-form assemblage of fabrics and found objects. Check out this list of materials used in the work, according to the Whitney: “Glass, water, stainless steel, cement, LEDs, remote control, pump, lantern, PVC, Marble dust, tinted chrome, cable ties, nylon rope, fans, twine, scarves, silk bows, candle, burlap, lace, dye and Italian marble.” That’s a pretty eclectic mix of stuff. Madere’s efforts represent in the latest in a series of periodic revivals of scatter-art/Arte Povera/abject aesthetics, that seem to crop up every decade, but he certainly adds scale and color to the formula.
