A blend of portraiture, abstraction and Pop Art, Rivers's paintings transcend traditional classification. Many of his pieces explore the themes of history and memory. In Erasing the Past 1, River depicts a group of Jews during the Holocaust. The image is blurred as if it is being erased, illustrating the tension between our conflicting desires to both remember and forget.
