An outsider artist who styled himself as a "mystic, psychic, lord and saint," Prophet Royal Robertson (1931–1997) was a sign painter by profession, and took advantage of his training to surround his home in Baldwin, LA, with hand-lettered warnings like "All Crazy Persons Keep Off Lot" and "No Divorced Whores Allowed." Inside his house, one could find handmade shrines to his wife, Adell, with whom he had a deep and abiding love-hate relationship. There were also renderings of future cities, lists of his daily problems and visions, and drawings of couples having sex. But there's no denying the panache behind the work. This show is the first in-depth look at his art ever presented in New York.
