Sculptor Robert Graham (1938–2008), though not that well-known in New York, was something of a legend in L.A., where he lived and worked for most of his career. A favorite of Hollywood and city fathers alike, Graham designed the ceremonial gates for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. His style was an unusual mix of figuration (mostly female nudes that owed as much, it seems, to Playboy as they did to classical anatomy) and geometric Minimalist elements (columns, pedestals, vitrines) that were intrinsic to the work. This show collects his early pieces from the late 1960s and early 1970s.
