Time Out says

Spanning the years 1810–1820, this Met survey focuses on the motif of the open window, and its importance to the artists of the Romantic movement who regarded it a metaphor for unfufilled longing—and a stand-in for the canvas itself. The key works in the show are a pair of sepia drawings by the great German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich (1775–1840), showing views out of his studio window in Dresden.
