Over the past decade, the Whitney Museum of American Art has sat by as Gotham’s other museums underwent expansion. Not that it didn’t try: Starting as far back as the 1980s, the Whitney submitted one proposal after another to its Upper East Side community board, and got repeatedly shot down. Finally, the Whitney realized it was time to move out. So it has and in a big way, with a new Renzo Piano–designed home boasting 63,000 square feet of space. Now the eight-story building, which dominates its MePa location, is open and ready for business with an inaugural show of the collection. While it’s called “America Is Hard to See” the new Whitney is anything but, as it sets out to kick major institutional ass.

“America Is Hard to See” opens May 1 at the Whitney.
