Body positivity meets the male gaze in Shona McAndrew’s show, in which the artist re-purposes female poses from mid-19th century French art to feminist ends. Featured are paintings and sculptures of women that reference the work of various painters—all men—linked to movements of the period such as Neoclassicism, Romanticism and Orientalism. In a twist on the Rubinesque nude, the subjects portrayed here are mostly zaftig, though they evidently own their appearance in defiance of the bodily standards that society tries to impose on women.
