"Stephen Burks: Man Made"

This exhibition is an outgrowth of an ongoing collaboration between Burks, a noted industrial designer, and various artisans from Senegal, South Africa, Peru and India. The focus here is on the techniques of basket-weaving, which Burks uses to create tables, lamps, chairs and other objects that fuse contemporary aesthetics with traditional crafts. To illustrate his process, Burks transforms the Studio Museum's gallery into a workshop, which allows viewers to watch as both functional and experimental items are produced on site by hand.
