“Lightness of Being” at City Hall Park
Irreverence is on the menu in this lineup of outdoor sculptures taking a playful poke at traditional public monuments. A giant zucchini, a sort of simian version of the Venus of Willendorf and a live clown snoozing on a park bench while clad in a crocheted shawl are some of the offerings on view. Through Dec 13

“Roving Signs” at Matthew Marks Gallery
A series of string-on-board cat’s-cradle collages made by Harry Smith—noted artist, filmmaker, collector and musicologist—was the immediate inspiration for this elegant summer group show, curated by painter Terry Winters. The exhibition’s broader theme is the old weird America captured by Smith in his iconic music compilation, The Anthology of American Folk Music. That inspiration is translated here into visual art contributions that spin out from Smith’s pieces, embracing Rosie Lee Tompkins’s quiltlike hangings, John Cohen’s photos of Peruvian Indians weaving, and sculptures by such name-brand artists as Donald Judd and Rachel Harrison. Claire Fontaine, Some Redemptions at Metro Pictures
Fontaine’s conceit is evident in the title of her installation, in which plastic recycling bags, filled with empty soda and beer cans, dangle from the ceiling. A stack of silvery ingots on the floor represents the total amount of aluminum in the hoard, and the juxtaposition of the weighty bars with the airy sacks makes a neat metaphor for the transformational state of being: a Venn diagram of Zen and sustainability. “Conspicuous Unusable” at Miguel Abreu Gallery
Abreu’s summer showcase strips things down to bare spatial essentials with Minimalist artworks both vintage and new. Highlights of the show include Rey Akdogan’s contribution, in which the gallery’s white tile floor has been pulled up; Charlotte Posenenske’s odd air-duct whatsit; and Dorothea Rockburne’s serial set of crude-oil–on-chipboard compositions. Through Aug 17

Top five shows: Aug 8–14, 2013
