Deft and off-handed, Shimizu’s painting style—a pre-schooler’s scrawl applied to images that are barely doodles—is well suited to his interest in unpacking the daily banalities of life in wry, visual shorthand. His latest work focuses on babies and parents and how the later serve as a blank screen for the former’s desire to re-visit and re-imagine their own childhood.
