Time Out says

The Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei (who was just recently released from a prison stint for tax-evasion charges) is represented through 227 photographs he took while living in the East Village from 1983 to 1993. The images picture city scenes, as well as Chinese intellectuals such as composer Tan Dun and fellow artist Xu Bing, who were also living in New York at the time.
