Madonna wasn't the first artist to look to kabbalah for inspiration. Starting in the ’70s a number of Jewish artists began interpreting ancient religious texts through their work. Rutgers professor Matthew Baigell lectures about how these creative types found their own voices through this spiritual exercise.
