Each week, we take two New Yorkers who swear they're totally undateable, and put our matchmaking skills to the test. Afterward, we find out what went well on their date, and what went horribly, horribly wrong.
Our daters had wine and snacks at Barawine (200 Malcolm X Blvd (Lenox Ave), 646-756-4154)
Brett: “I laughed because we were wearing almost identical clothing—a button-down with a sweater over it and jeans. I thought he was really polite and friendly.”
Josh: “He was super cute and nice, but there was no instant physical attraction. He’s not my traditional type. We’re similar in height, and I usually go for someone taller.”
Brett: “We talked about everything. He’s a great listener. There were no terrible moments —it was like a friend I had known before. I just didn’t feel a spark.”
Josh: “There was definitely a friendship vibe. There wasn’t the spark you’d want in someone romantically, but he’s really down-to-earth and has a good head on his shoulders.”
Brett: “He was sitting so I didn’t know how tall he was, but I was hoping he’d be taller than I am. He wasn’t. I’m five-foot-six, so there aren’t many people shorter than me.”
Josh: “I like to be the second one to arrive, so I walked around the block once. I guess I needed another lap, because I got there first. Brett said he did the same thing.”
Brett: “We walked to the subway. He asked for my number, and I think we kissed on the cheek. It was very cordial. We texted a little after about our weekends.”
Josh: “We had a little bit of a walk to the train. I was like, ‘I had a great time, let me get your number.’ I put it in my phone, we hugged it out, and he was on his way.”
In three words
Brett: Josh is "engaging, amiable and a good conversationalist."
Josh: Brett is "inspired, genuine and affable."
Brett: ♥♥♥ “It was a fun date but not any magical experience. We were so similar —I love myself, so I liked talking to him, but I’m looking for someone different.”
Josh: ♥♥♥ “It was a solid first date. He’s a really good guy, there were just no fireworks. We texted the next day, but if we hang out again, it’ll be as friends.”
