Meet the Undateables: Joe and Danny

Each week, we take two New Yorkers who swear they're totally undateable, and put our matchmaking skills to the test. Afterward, we find out what went well on their date, and what went horribly, horribly wrong.

Why they're single:
Joe: Has grown addicted to his independence and single life
Danny: It’s really hard to get his attention and keep it, which is typical of most people in New York

Ideal date:
Joe: Drinks at a gay dive bar, then, if things go well, dinner
Danny: A bike ride to the beach

THE DATE

First impression
Joe: “Right away I could tell that it would be a pretty effortless date because he’s easy to talk to and cute. I think both of us were a little underdressed, but we made the best of it.”
Danny: “I was really nervous because I’ve never been on a blind date. He was already sitting at the table with a cocktail. I thought he was cute but not really my type.”

Chemistry
Joe: “We’d both been to [the drag festival] Bushwig the prior weekend, so that gave us a lot to talk about in terms of drag culture and queerness. He’s a really positive person.”
Danny: “We found out we were both lawyers, so we started talking about our career paths. It was really fun to talk to him, but there was nothing romantic about it.”

Awkward Moment
Joe: “I brought up PrEP just because it’s interesting to hear what gay guys think. Also, when he went to the bathroom, I think we both looked at each other’s Scruff profiles.”
Danny: “He was slightly judgmental when I told him I wasn’t on PrEP. He kept grilling me about why I wasn’t on it and pressuring me to look into it.”

Afterward
Joe: “I was biking home, and he was worried for my safety, as I didn’t have a helmet and had downed three drinks, so I thought that was sweet. We kissed on the cheek.”
Danny: “We were there for a good three hours, then I walked him to a Citi Bike station, and he biked home. I gave him my number and we briefly texted, but it was a friendly thing.”

Verdict

Joe: ♥♥♥♥♥ “I think when you devote hours to someone, if you can enjoy your time together and not wish you were somewhere else, that’s five stars.”
Danny: ♥♥♥ “It was all very cordial. Joe was a really great guy, but I’m super picky in a particular way; I’m looking for some weird, crunchy hippie dude.”

Our daters went to Da Raffaele (883 First Ave, 646-895-9849)
