Meet the Undateables: Laura and Jared

Each week, we take two New Yorkers who swear they're totally undateable, and put our matchmaking skills to the test. Afterward, we find out what went well on their date, and what went horribly, horribly wrong.

Why they're single:
Laura: Has played around on dating apps, but nothing has stuck for more than a few months
Jared: Is direct about how he feels, and most women he’s met can’t handle that

Ideal date:
Laura: Good cocktails and a walk through the city afterward
Jared: Meeting for drinks or coffee, or playing billiards or Ping-Pong

THE DATE

First impression
Laura: “He was at the counter. We were the only people in there. He didn’t seem like someone I’d typically gravitate toward, but I came into the situation with an open mind.”
Jared: “I arrived 15 minutes early. I automatically knew I wasn’t entirely attracted to her, but she seemed nice so I shared a meal with her, and we had a nice conversation.”

Chemistry
Laura: “We work in similar fields, so that gave us some quick talking points. We had different interests outside of work, but it was cool to hear someone else’s perspective.”
Jared: “It was easy to talk to each other, and I definitely wasn’t trying to come across like I wasn’t interested at all. We both like to joke around, and we’re from the same area.”

Awkward Moment
Laura: “We left about 45 minutes after we got there, which seems pretty short to me. I couldn’t totally read whether he was trying to escape or he wanted to go on to something else.”
Jared: “We talked a lot about being direct, and I didn’t necessarily practice what I preached. My gut said to just part ways at the end, but I didn’t want to hurt her.”

Afterward
Laura: “I thought he was going to walk away without my phone number, but I offered it to him. He texted me that he thought we could hang out in a friends capacity.”
Jared: “I congratulated both of us for getting through this whole blind date thing. I took down her number, and we just had a brief texting conversation.”

Verdict
Laura: ♥♥♥ “I went in with low expectations, and it was fine; fine is how I described it to a couple of friends. It’s a real shot in the dark with these, but I’m glad that I tried it.”
Jared: ♥♥ “It definitely takes a certain kind of person to do a blind date, but ultimately I wasn’t attracted to her. I would be interested in possibly forming a friendship.”
