Meet the Undateables: Tara and Daniel

Each week, we take two New Yorkers who swear they're totally undateable, and put our matchmaking skills to the test. Afterward, we find out what went well on their date, and what went horribly, horribly wrong.

Why they're single:
Tara: She’s blunt and strange and overly ambitious at her job
Daniel: He’s hesitant to commit and enjoys living the single life

Ideal date:
Tara: Going to a bookshop and getting coffee, then going to a museum
Daniel: Dinner, a funny movie and making out on the sofa

THE DATE

First impression
Tara: “I was so anxious and kept looking at the door. He got there 10 minutes late. I work in the fashion industry, and my first thought was, Oh, my God, what is he wearing?”
Daniel: “She was objectively cute but probably not my type. I’m an eccentric guy, but she’s more alternative than what I would generally be attracted to.”

Chemistry
Tara: “He didn’t even seem interested in the fact that I was sitting across from him. The owner came over, and I thought, He’s cute, could he just be sitting here instead?”
Daniel: “She’s a pagan; that’s not something you see every day. I don’t think she was interested in me sexually, but if she had offered, I would have had sex with her no problem.”

Awkward Moment
Tara: “We talked about why we signed up for this, and he said he did it because he likes attention. That was kind of a turnoff. From then on the conversation wasn’t great.”
Daniel: “I told her my place was cleaned that day, and I think she inferred that I expected her to come over. But it was gratuitous; I have my place cleaned twice a month.”

Afterward
Tara: “I had to go catsit and I was tired, so I got an Uber and we walked outside. We did a quick hug and a weird high five. I gave him my business card.”
Daniel: “Just to be polite I asked for her number, and we exchanged business cards. Maybe I’ll Facebook her, but I don’t see it going anywhere.”

Verdict

Tara: ♥ “My date was truly himself, and I think that’s awesome. I can’t see us dating, and I’m not really sure if I can see us being friends. It was pretty painful.”
Daniel: ♥♥♥ “I enjoyed her company, but there wasn’t a romantic atmosphere. We agreed we don’t have much in common, but it was a fun experience.”

Our daters went to The Meatball Shop (84 Stanton St, 212-982-8895)
