Capturing the Friedmans

No kids’ entertainer will creep you out faster than David Friedman, who’s billed as “NYC’s number one birthday clown.” David’s father and youngest brother were the targets of a shocking child-abuse investigation in Great Neck, L.I., in the 1980s. Director Jarecki (who will sit for a postscreening Q&A) had intended to make a documentary about the party-clown circuit, but when David’s past started to emerge during interviews, Jarecki changed his approach—and ended up with this morbidly riveting film.
