Time Out says

Invaders: Director William Cameron Menzies was a brilliant production designer, and this chiller told from the perspective of a wide-eyed boy is often creeptastic. But dramatically speaking, it's not exactly compelling. The Thing: A group of men come across an alien life form frozen in the Arctic tundra, and a sci-fi classic is born. Christian Nyby is credited as the film’s director, but it’s widely acknowledged that producer Howard Hawks was calling the shots around the set.
