Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion

Alongside such inscrutable legends as Dostoyevsky’s Raskolnikov and Camus’s Meursault broods the unnamed police inspector at the center of this story. But the film, driven by Gian Maria Volonté’s peerlessly oleaginous performance, never truly enlarges the thesis implicit in its title; instead, it plays out almost exactly as you’d expect.
