Smoke

A multifaceted portrait of a Brooklyn neighborhood, this acclaimed indie drama means well, but it tries too damn hard; it was written by novelist Paul Auster, whose scripts tend to be far too precious and overtly symbolic. Strong acting, though, especially by Ashley Judd.
