Bertolucci’s high-gloss story of a young girl’s sexual awakening could more accurately be titled Liv Tyler Gets Laid. Yet so skilled is his direction, so fluid his rhythms, that he frequently manages to fool you into believing that something magical is just about to happen. Sadly, nothing ever does, but you appreciate the effort all the same.
