You probably couldn’t ask for a better screen adaptation of Robert Anderson’s rather lachrymose stage play, in which an effeminate prep-school student embarks upon an affair with a teacher’s wife (Deborah Kerr). Unless, of course, Todd Haynes decides to do a remake.
