Built to Spill

Built to Spill fans who miss the instant gratification of, say, the blissful call-and-response breakdown of “Carry the Zero” from 1999’s Keep It Like a Secret will rejoice at the band's recent LP Untethered Moon. The record moves on from the meandering, stoner jamming of BTS's last full-length, 2009's There Is No Enemy, turning to direct hooky melodies and revived energy, for more of the epic-yet-intimate plaintive indie rock that marked its excellent beginnings. In the opening set, Frances Quinlan tests the limits of her voice in heartrending, thrilling pop-punk combo Hop Along, and buzzy youngster Alex G—who recently appeared on Frank Ocean's Endless—airs his pleasantly demented psyche-stylings.
