Crystal Stilts touch on Jesus and Mary Chain, Joy Division and, naturally, the Velvet Underground; although the group can lack for original thought, it has a surfeit of panache. Veronica Falls features members of the Royal We, a short-lived art-punk band whose sole album suggested a charmed, if unrealized, future. Here, the musicians wed sweet pop to a crude lo-fi buzz. It’s a familiar formula, trendy in the U.K. (in the ’80s) and Brooklyn (right now). Yet these four artists seem born to break hearts and jangle guitars.
