The Congo's Konono No. 1 draws on the legacy of Bazombo trance music to create pulsing, metallic-toned cascades of rhythmic shimmer that invoke the power of ritual sound and the magic of tinnitus. Fans who want to place the group within the noise vanguard may find the new Assume Crash Position too easygoing. No one else will mind. It’s got moments of buzzing catharsis, but for the most part it’s packed with driving grooves and extroverted vocal refrains. Also on this Africa-centric bill are sweet-voiced Senegalese troubadour Omar Pene and the uplifting reggae unit Meta and the Cornerstones.
