Where Mouth's Cradle goes for a 8-bit, nerdy hip-hop vibe, Unisex Salon is shamelessly in thrall to the '80s—and we do mean shamelessly: as in, with no regard for taste or even really musicianship. Kenyon Phillips's pop crew makes music that sounds like a parody of several different '80s bands all at once (Roxy, Duran Duran, Nu Shooz)—as executed on your grade school's Casio synthesizer.
