Composer Ted Hearne mixes the gravity of a classical oratorio and the rich heft of a big jazz ensemble in Katrina Ballads, a somber, biting work that draws its texts from reminiscences and public statements made in the week after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. The presentation is overseen by adventurous producer Beth Morrison and includes films by Bill Morrison; among the singers is soulful Denver jazz chanteuse Renée Marie.
