West Coast duo the Dutchess and the Duke’s reference points are specific and considered: Brian Jones–era Stones, 1965’s Bob Dylan, etc.… It’s as if the musicians hold Ph.D.’s in record collecting. In support (and a lot of fun), Jason Sebastian Russo (Mercury Rev, Hopewell) fronts Common Prayer, trading vocals with percussionist and ladypal Alexandra Marver. The band's debut album There is a Mountain mixes up dreamy, lush orch-pop with ramshackle folk jangling, to genuinely charming effect—amped up, of course, for the live show.
