White Light Festival. Pairing English early-music vocal consort the Hilliard Ensemble with Norwegian jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek, as the ECM label did in 1993, must have seemed like a long shot. But the resulting album, 1994's Officium, went on to sell 1.5 million copies—small wonder, given its quiet intensity and devotional spirit. Tonight the singers and saxophonist reunite to play music from their third collaboration, the newly released, Armenian-inspired Officium Novum.
