Catch saxist Tony Malaby live and you'll quickly understand why he's one of the busiest jazzers in town: His versatile tenor can move without warning from warm and fuzzy to gruff and slicing. Novela, one of his larger outfits, surrounds his tenor with alto and baritone saxes, trumpet and trombone; pianist Kris Davis minds the backcourt with a tuba player and a drummer.
