Voice Coils features members of expressionistic local metal and avant-rock bands such as Couch Slut and Cellular Chaos, but the band led by guitarist-composer Sam Garrett favors a much subtler M.O. There's no easy genre tag for what Voice Coils are up to, but suffice to say that they're one of the city's more trailblazing bands, as you can hear on Heaven's Sense, a formidably complex yet radically lovely new EP of shadowy prog-gone-pop. Opening is Charlie Looker, the like-minded singer-songwriter behind such bands as Extra Life and Psalm Zero.
