The name of this family-run restaurant in Bedford-Stuyvesant comes from Ernest Hemingway’s boat, Pilar, which he used for fishing trips in Cuba. One peek at the menu reveals this eatery stays true to its Cuban roots. Start with chicken, spinach, cod or beef empanadas ($9 for two) or plantain chips stuffed with shrimp or skirt steak ($12). For entrees, there’s a classic pressed cubano sandwich ($14) served with more plantain chips, arroz con pollo ($15) or ropa vieja, skirt steak with tomatoes peppers and onions ($19). You might want to sample a side of yuca fries ($6) or some house-made chorizo ($5), too. Sip on cuban soft drinks like the pineapple-flavored Jupiña or the yerba mate–spiked Materva. The authentic flavors of a home cooked Cuban meal with the sophistication of a Michelin restaurant, Best Cuban Sandwich I've ever had, and the guava and cream cheese pie was to die for. Wonderful service and great ambiance! Not to mention the authentic family photos from the Cuba of yesterday! Can't wait to go back!
This is truly a neighborhood gem. The owners are hospitable. They make you feel as though you are a part of their family. It is difficult to find great Cuban food in Brooklyn and this place by far is the best. Breakfast, lunch, dinner or brunch you can not go wrong. The vibe and food is simple but done with a great amount of care to the details.

Wow. Seriously authentic and excellently prepared Cuban food outside of Miami. That's extremely difficult to find. Honestly, it's better then what you get in miami, more gourmet and high end, bust sill traditional. I can't believe they have tamal en cazuela, my absolute fav. and the croquettes are the best i've ever had. They have dishes you just don't see anywhere else, those that i grew up eating in south florida.
Pilar's food is savory and delicious. It always leaves me craving for more. The picadillo and pernil dishes are my two favorites. And the maduros are cooked to perfection.
I like this place because it's cultural based on the culture that really exists. Spanish cidra, cafecito, etc... This place is not absolutely authentic and can be a little pop but it has the firm background unlike the other new wave bars with shallow concepts that are popping up in the hood every three months.
There food is better than authentic, they have great craft beers and the onbionce and waiting staff is great.
The chef/owner is amazing! I've been a long time customer, frequently visiting their first location, this weekend was the first time at the new place, and it's so much bigger, and very beautifully decorated. I was very impressed. I was reading about pricing going up and portions going down, well the prices definitely went up, but the portion size is still the same to me, it's the right amount of food for you to leave very satisfied. I started off with the empanadas chicken/beef both were very good, and I loved the green sauce they came with, I can actually dip everything in it! I also had the croquettes, which has always been my absolute favorite Cuban thing to eat, and they make them perfect here. For dinner I had the Pernil, which comes with white rice, black beans, yuca, and manduros, absolutely delicious! Reminded me of their old small spot where the food tasted so homemade.
I couldn't leave without some Cuban coffee, so we ordered the coffee con leche and passion fruit flan, the coffee was delicious, I expected more from the flan, maybe a regular plain flan would be better.
Service was great...no complaints at all
I also ordered drinks, what they consider to be a white sangria...small portion on that! $10 a glass, not strong at all, three big sips, and it was basically done.
Overall love this place, will be back!!!!
