Ako Dachs, founder of the bilingual company Amaterasu Za, directs and stars in her own spin on the oft-told Chūshingura tale of 47 former samurai who commit themselves to avenging their master's death in early 18th-century Japan. In the gender-crossing tradition of some Japanese theater—Dachs is a former member of the all-female Takarazuka Revue—some of the male roles are played by women. Performances are mainly in Japanese with English supertitles.
