Geographic and emotional gulfs are crossed by love in Bathsheba Doran’s quick-witted new play, which is darker and weirder than you might expect. Over 21 scenes that span seven years, Doran hints about the ripening of the affair between a poetry scholar (Kristen Bush) and a trainer (Patch Darragh) through indirect scenes of the lovers’ relatives or friends. And Sam Gold’s ideally cast, coolly abstracted staging stays lodged in your mind long after you’ve seen it.—David Cote
