The Mountaintop

Katori Hall tries to slyly humanize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on his last night on earth, but the nonsensical aspects of her magical-realist riff are only underscored in Kenny Leon's heavy-handed staging. Samuel L. Jackson is warm and engaging as King, but Angela Bassett hams it up terribly as a mysterious maid.—David Cote
