If your interest in yoga goes beyond buying the latest Lululemon leggings, you’re probably aware of the growing popularity of kirtan—the singing equivalent of a yoga class. Kirtans feature a live band playing Indian instruments (harmonium, tabla drums and so on), and you get to sing the Sanskrit chants call-and-response style with a lead singer. It can be heady, ecstatic stuff. What’s so exciting about this particular event is that it has super-cool Dinosaur Jr. singer J Mascis leading the group. The indie-rock icon is a devotee of Indian spiritual leader Amma (known as “the hugging saint”) for whom he previously recorded an album, and the Oct 22 gig is a fund-raiser.
