Summer is the best time to explore New York City. Everyone comes out of their winter slumber to explore, and they’re handsomely rewarded with tons of activities just a stroll, bike ride or ferry trip away. To celebrate the season, we teamed up with Francis Coppola Diamond Collection wines to bring you the best summer activities you can’t miss. Check out our essential bucket list below and don't forget to mark off the ones you're most excited about!

Take the ferry to the Rockaways

NYC Ferry has expanded its service this summer, with new routes including one that’ll take you from lower Manhattan to NYC’s buzziest beachy oasis, the Rockaways. Since you’ll be cruisin’ there in style (and for an affordable $2.75 fare), you might as well take the chance to soak in the sights of New York harbor. There’s the Statue of Liberty! And, hey, New Jersey! You’ll have the sand between your toes in no time.

The New York skyline is obviously one of the best in the world, and it’s best viewed from a rooftop or park in either Brooklyn or Queens. Though the vista is a year-round treat, the city’s annual 4th of July Fireworks celebration is a can’t-miss time to make it special. Find a romantic spot, crack a bottle from the Diamond Collection and watch all those patriotic firecrackers go.

While we love the quiet, dark (air-conditioned) escape of the movie theater, watching films outdoors, among a crowd of fellow cinephiles, is a good move too. Make sure you bring a blanket for Bryant Park’s film offerings, which happen every Monday night during the summer. Though the film doesn’t start till sunset, you’ll want to arrive right at 5pm (or before) to secure an optimal spot. In typical New York fashion, it’s all about real estate.

The waterways around New York harbor can seem scary. But what’s a few toxic fish and old shoes? You can grab a kayak or canoe from organizations such as the Downtown Boathouse and LIC Boathouse and explore for yourself. Beginner paddles will get you set up with a life vest, give you some basic techniques and make sure you don’t drift too far from shore.

Exercise your civic pride and march in NYC’s iconic Mermaid Parade. Typically, those who take part in the summertime promenade aren’t shy about wearing revealing outfits, body paint and glittery mermaid fins. Afterwards, celebrate with a Nathan’s hot dog and a ride on the Cyclone (though maybe not in that order).

Catch a Mets or Yankees game

It’s a perennial question: Mets or Yankees? In our experience, there is no wrong answer. Both stadiums feature top-notch food from local purveyors as well as ballpark staples like peanuts and Cracker Jack. Grab a seat in the bleachers and don’t forget your mitt.

Hit up a free outdoor concert

The number of free summer concerts in NYC can get pretty ridiculous. The biggest organizer of free shows, SummerStage, hosts acts in all five boroughs, taking over green spaces like East River Park in Manhattan and Coffey Park in Brooklyn with hip-hop, indie rock, salsa and more. Depending on the location, pull up with a blanket, chair or just your dancing shoes.

Wherefore art the free theater at? In Central Park! Since 1954, the Public Theatre has been presenting the Bard’s works for free, and this year it’ll present Julius Caesar and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. To get your free ticket, line up at the Delacorte Theatre or the Public, or download the Today Tix app to register for the daily lottery.

The Queens waterfront park hosts amazing, large-format creations each summer. This year the space is overrun by goats. Yes, you read that right. “Nari Ward: G.O.A.T., again” features models of actual goats, while also referencing the abbreviation “greatest of all time.” Wander the five-acre park and contemplate the statues as you take in the view of the skyline across the river. Worked up a thirst? Quench it with that bottle from the Diamond Collection you had the forethought to bring.

Grill some weenies at a park that allows grilling

What’s better than firing up some charcoal briquettes and roasting frankfurters on a breezy summer afternoon? Nothing—especially if you’re doing it in one of NYC’s parks. Not all of them allow grilling, so refer to nycgovparks.org before you head out. Grab all the supplies, including plastic cups for any, ahem, beverages, and claim a good spot. Don’t forget the sunscreen. And remember to leave the space as clean as you found it!
